OPAF Fit for Life

The Fund’s Fit for Life™ program benefits individuals whose level of ability and degree of mobility may not allow for participation in physically-demanding aerobic exercise. This program currently focuses on golf, a lifetime sport that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and disabilities.

In cooperation with the National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA), the Fund is pleased to offer First Swing clinics.

First Swing clinics are open to all allied-health professionals and every individual with a physical disability regardless of age or disability.

Robert Wilson, Executive Director of NAGA developed First Swing to instruct physical therapists in teaching and encouraging individuals with physical disabilities to learn, or re-learn, the game of golf. First Swing clinics enable enjoyment of the unique, friendly atmosphere found on the golf course. They also enable participants to gain a greater sense of personal achievement.

Working together, the Fund and NAGA provide an abbreviated version of the second day instruction. These mini-clinics offer guidance in swinging a golf club and learning how to get the golf ball airborne.

In the full two-day First Swing program, day one offers the basics of the game to therapists and to others interested in teaching individuals with physical disabilities. Practitioner participants are invited to swing a club – standing on one leg, sitting in a wheel chair, or using only one hand – to appreciate more completely the new demands that will be made upon their educational training as they teach others. The second day of the clinic is devoted to therapists instructing individuals with physical disabilities under the expertise of NAGA members.

In August 2002, OPAF expanded its partnership with NAGA. Read about this new arrangement here.

“I don’t get to play golf as much as I’d like, but now I feel that I have the tools to bring my game to the next level.”
